Hamburger Steaks with Brown Gravy

Prep time: 15 mins | Cook time: 20 mins | Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • The Steaks:
    • 1 lb ground beef.
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs.
    • 1 egg, lightly beaten.
    • 1/2 tsp onion powder.
    • Salt and black pepper to taste.
  • The Savory Toppings:
    • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced.
    • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (button or cremini).
  • The Brown Gravy:
    • 2 cups beef broth.
    • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour.
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce.
    • 1 tbsp unsalted butter.

Instructions

  1. Form the Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, and seasonings. Form the mixture into four oval-shaped patties, about 3/4-inch thick.
  2. Sear: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. They don’t need to be fully cooked through yet. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
  3. Sauté: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking for 5–7 minutes until softened and caramelized.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer: Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Simmer for 5–10 minutes until the gravy has thickened and the steaks are cooked to your desired level of doneness.
  6. Serve: Spoon plenty of the onion and mushroom gravy over each steak and serve immediately.
