Instructions
- Chop: Be sure the cabbage and carrots are chopped into very small pieces (about the size of rice grains) to match the authentic texture.
- Whisk: In a large bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, milk, buttermilk, lemon juice, vinegar, salt, and pepper until the dressing is smooth and the sugar has mostly dissolved.
- Combine: Add the cabbage, carrots, and onions to the bowl. Toss thoroughly until every bit of vegetable is coated in the dressing.
- The Secret Step: Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, though overnight is best. This allows the cabbage to soften slightly and the flavors to meld into that iconic taste.
- Serve: Give it a final stir before serving chilled.
