🛒 Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 1 large green bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup button mushrooms, chopped (optional)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch dissolved in 2 tbsp cold water (cornstarch slurry)
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
- 6 hoagie rolls or brioche buns
- 1 cup Cheiz Whiz or melted Provolone cheese sauce (as pictured in image_25601a.jpg)
👩🍳 Instructions
Step 1: Sauté the Veggies
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are softened and the onions begin to take on a golden, caramelized color.
Step 2: Brown the Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking the meat up into small crumbles with a wooden spoon, until it is entirely browned and no pink remains. Drain any excess grease from the pan.
Step 3: Simmer the Sauce
Turn the heat down to medium. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, then season generously with salt and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and let it bubble for 2 to 3 minutes until the liquid thickens into a glossy, savory gravy that coats the beef perfectly.
Step 4: Assemble and Toast
Preheat your oven’s broiler to high. Open the hoagie rolls and place them on a baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the warm Philly beef mixture into each roll.
Step 5: Add the Cheese
Drizzle your melted cheese sauce or Cheez Whiz heavily over the beef filling. Pop the baking sheet under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes just until the cheese is bubbling and the edges of the hoagie rolls are beautifully toasted. Serve immediately while piping hot!
